Tarifit is one of the Amazigh (Berber) languages, rooted mainly in northern Morocco (Nador, Al Hoceima, Tangier) and in the Spanish enclave of Melilla. Because of migration, it also has a large community of speakers in several European cities (Barcelona, Brussels, Antwerp, Paris, Amsterdam, Utrecht, Gouda).

The intensity of its use is nevertheless uneven depending on the geographical context. Among some passive speakers in particular, there is linguistic insecurity: they show excellent comprehension of the language, but are reluctant to speak it for lack of confidence in their communication skills.

Structurally, Tarifit shares a common grammatical foundation with all Berber varieties. Mutual intelligibility between morphologically close varieties is largely preserved, a phenomenon reinforced today by the rise of social media. Thus, verbal interactions between speakers from Nador and Al Hoceima take place without any major language barrier.
Mastering simple phonological correspondences is enough to make exchange smoother. As an illustration, the spirant phoneme /d/ in damment (honey), produced by a speaker from Al Hoceima, corresponds to the spirant /t/ of tamment, used in Nador. More broadly, Tarifit stands out for a particularly marked spirantization phenomenon.
