Exhibition: the career of the painter Rabah Oukli from 12 September to 15 November in Drancy

From Taourirt Moussa to Montmartre: a life between two shores

Born on 14 August 1939 in the Algiers region, Rabah Oukli grew up in Taourirt Moussa, a village in Greater Kabylia near Tizi Ouzou. It was on the benches of the village school that he began to draw. At sixteen, he moved to Algiers and worked for Michelin, before settling in France, where he was first a building worker.

A late vocation

His passion never left him. He eventually entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and then devoted himself fully to painting. Based in Seine-Saint-Denis, he worked tirelessly until his death on 7 December 2022 in Romainville, leaving an abundant body of work.

A painting of attachment

Portraits, landscapes, still lifes and scenes of everyday life make up the bulk of his work. Alongside these subjects, an important part of his output returns to his native Kabylia, its faces, its light and its gestures, holding together the village of origin and the Parisian studio.

The exhibition

“From Taourirt Moussa to Montmartre” retraces this journey, from Algeria to Paris.

It was designed with the Lounès Matoub Cultural Centre, the city of Drancy and the artist’s family.
